Boats come in all different shapes and sizes- they can be powered by gasoline, diesel fuel oil, solar power, sail power, and/ or human power. Then there are those that have no propulsion at all and just get pulled or pushed around stacked with lumber, sand or rocks(barges).
The earliest boats Archaeologists have uncovered date to around 8,000 years ago(canoes dugout of tree trunks). However, experts believe the first boat to have been built 900,000 years ago by Homo-Erectus who lacked speech and language. The evidence is based on the fact that they expanded their civilizations to islands that were much too far for humans to swim. Since 70% of the earth is covered in water it’s no wonder boats have continued to evolve for work and pleasure.
Different shapes and sizes serve different proposes and there is not one better than the other, but rather one more suited for the purpose intended. A light and fast race boat is not the most comfortable on a long rough passage. Conversely a heavy displacement long keeled boat is not the one you want to tack around the racecourse for the day.
When looking for your boat, you first need to decide what you want to do with it. If you don’t yet know renting/ chartering is a great way to figure out what you like.
